National Gems School was founded in 1968 by the Late Ganesh Prasad Khanna at 629, Diamond Harbour Road, Kolkata 700034. He was a visionary with the desire to impart education to all segments of society. By 1993, the school was upgraded to class VIII and was poised at a delicate stage of obtaining affiliation from a recognised body.
It was then that a Trust was formed by the name of Shaw Education Foundation at the initiation of the Late Narayan Shaw and Mr. Sudip Kumar Khanna.
The mission and vision of every school is to educate the child. By education we do not mean the mere accumulation of degrees. Education means knowledge which builds up an individuality and commands respect everywhere. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi – education draws out the best in the child – in body, mind and spirit. It commands a refinement of thoughts, ideas and words. It builds up efficiency and efficacy. But in the present day context, when there is a boom in technology, immense care is required to filter knowledge and its use. As teachers, educators and care – givers, our constant endeavour is to focus on the positive aspect of technology and use it to our advantage. Our internal plan therefore is to guide our students to make a positive use of technology for nurturing a creative mind. We envision a holistic development in every child. Our focus is not just an academic excellence but also on co – curricular activities and thus “to hold high our banner.”

National Gems Higher Secondary School had opened its doors to children from the neighbourhood for quality education. The core philosophy of the school ever since has remained unchanged. Over the years many of our students have made us proud by their sheer dint of perseverance towards excellence. Their bond and love for the school speaks of the care and understanding received by them from dedicated teachers over the years.
I cherish my long association with the school seeing it grow from strength to strength, be it in terms of infrastructure, facilities or extra-curricular activities for students. It has truly been amazing. At every stage under the able guidance of the School Management and the school Principal, this institution has reached several milestones.
This is a school where walking through its gates has been described as homecoming by teachers and students alike. I pray that with continued support from all associated with the school, we will attain greater heights in the years to come.
